HUMAN-ROBOT INTERACTION

The views that humans and machines will one day be inseparable are quite common. Today, where these thoughts are common, human-robot interaction is a research topic that focuses on how robotic systems used by humans and/or in the same environment should have a design or shape for safe and efficient work. In short, it is research that measures and focuses on the adaptation of robots to humans and humans to robots. In this context, robots try to understand, and meet humans by seeing, hearing, and feeling like humans. For this, robots can interact with humans using artificial intelligence algorithms such as image processing, voice recognition, and contact sensors.

e.g; A speech recognition system is used to interpret human requests or commands. Combining proprioception, sensory and speech information serves to obtain information about the human position and situation (standing, sitting) and facilitates the interaction of the robot.

Human-robot interaction is a new and emerging field of study. On the other hand, human interaction with robots is predictably as old as the existence of robots. How much should people trust robots? How can a human relationship with a robot? Should human-like robots be produced? How human-like would it be if produced?

Years ago, questions like this and the ideas that came with them were just science fiction. Today, however, many of these questions have become a reality and form the core research questions of Human-Robot interaction studies. Of course, psychology has a very important place in this multidisciplinary structure, which includes many fields from robotics to philosophy.  Based on all of these, human-robot interaction systems have to work in real-time by nature. So what is meant by this real-time work? If the robot detects and responds to the 'stop' message from the human after 1 minute or if the robot continues the same movement for 1 minute, it poses great security risks.

The spread of humanoid robots has been thanks to the studies on artificial intelligence. However, robotics has shown itself in the fields of health, education, and science. Many surgeries, the production of many products in the industry, and the realization of many activities in education are done thanks to robots. Especially productions in heavy industry are made by robots. In heavy industry, robots come into play in situations that exceed human power. The use of robots is very important because computer systems provide error-free production. To give another example from the robot vacuum cleaner, which is in everyone's home today, these vacuums start by getting to know the house they are in, in order to facilitate human life, to perform the sweeping function and to do them by adapting to human life. Using the visual localization feature, the robot vacuum cleaners identify the places that need to be cleaned at home, go to the charging station automatically when it is discharged, and continue to clean after charging. Robot vacuums have a battery life of about 2 hours. It notifies you via the application that the dust collection basket is full.

In this video, it is possible to see how the robot vacuum cleaner Alex can actually interact with the people in the video.
